       Lo encontramos como montador en Universal, Para mount y Republic a partir de 1929. En los anos 40 dirige cortometrajes, algunos de los cuales logran merecida fama. En los 50 se convierte en un avispado productor de peliculas de aventuras, fundando la Warwick Productions con Albert R. Broccoli. Rompe con su socio a raiz de la llegada de James Bond, con la que Allen no estaba muy de acuerdo. Sorpren dentemente, aunque tal vez debido al exito de la serie del famoso espia, se hace cargo de la produccion de las peliculas consagradas a otro espia de ficcion, Matt Helm, encarnado por Dean Martin. Las tres entregas son The Silencers (Phil Karlson, 1966), Matt Helm, agente muy especial (Murderer’s Row, Henry Levin, 1967), y Emboscada a Matt Helm (The Ambushers, Henry Levin, 1968). Polaco de nacimiento, aborda esporadicamente la direccion de sus proyectos, entre los que cabe citar su colaboracion con Burgess Meredith en El hombre de la Torre Eiffel (The Man On the Eiffel Tour, 1949), y New Mexico, un western oficialmente dirigido por Irving Reis.        Sus origenes en el cine se situan dentro de la tarea de operador de camara y, despues, ayudante de direccion. Su carrera como director comienza realmente en 1936. Lesley Selander es uno de los grandes especialistas del western, con mas de cien peliculas a sus espaldas. Decir “uno de los grandes especialistas” no es lo mismo que decir “uno de los grandes nombres” y, en efecto, la trayectoria de Selander, en lo que a la calidad de sus peliculas se refiere, es irregular. Lo que, sin embargo, sorprende es que la valoracion media de sus westerns no es baja, lo que indica que el director poseia un especial instinto para el genero, que pone de manifiesto con una plastica mas que correcta y un buen manejo del tiempo de la narracion. Inabarcable por su extension, es dificil senalar los filmes que destacan en tan amplia muestra, pero si me veo en la obligacion de citar alguno, no dudaria en elegir las peliculas que hizo para Allied Artists a finales de los anos 40 y principios de los 50, y algunas otras de las ultimas que realizo, como Dakota Lil o The Broken Star.
